Guitar Repair, Restoration and Guitar making - A Guitar Player Resource

A website dedicated to helping guitar players of every level learn more about their guitar, caring for their guitar, what to do when their guitar needs repair work and a shed light on what a professional luthier does when the guitar hits the workbench.  While some situations are easily remedied by simple adjustments a professional luthier knows best how to optimize your favorite guitar.

Wood Finishing

Perhaps no area of guitar building is more confusing than how to achieve a quality finish.  In 2003 I made the decision to attend the National Institute for Wood Finishing Technology at DCTC in Rosemount Minnesota.  Up to that point I had finishing experience but lacked a thorough understanding of what works, what doesn't and most importantly "Why".  Just like the guitar program in Red Wing Minnesota, I was lucky enough to be within 45 minutes of another great program.  It was at DCTC under the guidance of instructor Mitch Kohanek I was able to fully sink my teeth into a subject I enjoyed so much.  Unfortunately the program ceased once Mitch decided to retire from teaching in 2012.  The education provided at DCTC for wood finishing was the best in the world and I'm proud to continue the spirit of finishing education today specific to the world of guitars.

Here is a Gibson Les Paul that suffered several headstock breaks.  I re-attached the headstock, patched in new wood to reenforce it and was working on color matching using the same piece of wood I used to reenforce the broken area.

The education at DCTC included:

  • Finish Application Techniques
    • Padding, Brushing, Spraying
  • Color Theory, Color Matching
  • Understanding Finishing Materials
    • Sealers, Fillers
    • Solvents, Solubility Parameters
    • Shellac, Lacquer, Varnish
    • Post Catalyzed Lacquer
    • Conversion Varnish
    • Pigments, Dyes
    • Stains, Glazes
    • Toners, Shaders
    • Primers, Paints
  • New Wood Finishing
  • Refinishing Methods
  • Finish Touch-up Techniques
  • Conservation and Restoration
