beginning advice

  • Do not try to do something you don't know how to do.

advice explained

Strings

When you play the guitar the sweat in your fingers and differences in body chemistry and string materials can react in a way that oxidizes the strings quickly and deadens the sound prematurely.  It's great to be in the habit of wiping the strings after you play especially if you sweat a lot or find the strings rust quickly.  Significant rust on your strings after playing just a couple of times is an indication your body chemistry reacts dramatically to that material.  You can try a different brand of string or different material but wiping them down after each time you play will help.

There are products marketed to clean, restore or extend the life of strings but until I test those products for myself I can't recommend them and do not sell them.

Finish

There are a wide variety of finishes used on musical instruments but furniture polishes often contain excessive amounts silicone to reduce surface tension which makes the surface easier to dust.  This excessive silicon will cause problems if the instrument should ever require repair work to the coating and once it makes its way into the wood there's no easy or practical way to remove it.  Use a product formulated specifically for guitar finishes.

Extremes

Guitars are almost always made from wood or laminates which are susceptible to fluctuations in temperature and humidity.  The adhesives used to assemble the components can also fail when subjected high temperatures combined with the stresses of string tension.

Guitars and other wooden instruments are best kept in an environment of consistent temperature and humidity.  Guitar makers work hard to find a happy medium as they build so instruments perform well wherever they are shipped.  Usually we strive for 68-72 degrees and 40% relative humidity it isn't always possible.  The main point of emphasis for players is to keep the temperature as consistent as possible for as long as possible.

Don't Know?  Don't Do.

So many repairs are avoidable if you understand basic guitar care information.  However, there is a significant amount of repair work which comes from DIY hack jobs.  It doesn't matter if a guitar is an inexpensive import or a rare vintage piece...people ruin guitars every day without considering the realities of what they try to do.  Ultimately the only way to avoid damaging the value, structure or aesthetic is for each
